Max Cananzi

Board of Directors Member

Max is a member of the Board of Directors of OMERS Sponsors Corporation, a jointly sponsored, defined pension plan with over $120 billion in assets.

Max was most recently the President of Alectra Utilities Corporation, the largest municipally owned utility company in Canada. A position from which he retired from in 2020 after having played a central role in its creation in 2017, which involved a multi-utility merger and a utility acquisition.

Prior to Alectra, Max was President and CEO of Horizon Utilities Corporation, where he was very active in advancing Horizon’s strategy, particularly in areas of mergers and acquisitions and sustainability. Under his leadership, Horizon became the first utility in Canada to receive the prestigious Sustainable Electricity CompanyTM designation from Electricity Canada.

Max has played a leadership role in the ongoing development of the sector through his work with the government, Ontario Energy Board and sector associations. Max has served on the boards of Electricity Distributors Association (Chair), MEARIE, Ontario Energy Association (Chair), Canadian Electricity Association (CEA), and Ontario Energy Network.

In 2013, Max was recognized for his leadership in sustainability and utility performance as a Clean50 award recipient. In 2017, he was co-awarded the Ontario Energy Association (OEA) Leader of the Year for his leadership in the merger and creation of Alectra. In 2020, Max was recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the OEA for his leadership, contribution and achievements in Ontario’s energy sector. In 2021 the EDA awarded Max the Chair’s Citation Award for outstanding dedication and service to the EDA and the industry over an extended period.

Max graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Electrical Engineering and is a licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario. He received his Master of Business Administration from the Schulich School of Business at York University.
