Most Common Electricity Scams

Threats of Immediate Disconnection of Service

We understand that there may be times when you fall behind in paying your bill. When your payment is overdue, GrandBridge Energy will contact you by phone and will also deliver important overdue notices to your address.

We will never threaten to disconnect your electricity service immediately without advance notice. We are mandated by the Ontario Energy Board to follow an industry-wide collection process.

  • You receive a call after regular business hours or on a weekend. This is a scam! GrandBridge Energy does not make collection calls after 5:00 p.m., on weekends or on statutory holidays.
  • The caller asks for immediate bill payment over the telephone, via wire transfer, gift card, Paypal or crypto/bitcoin currency. Learn more about your bill payment options.
  • The caller threatens to disconnect your residential service between November 15 and April 30. This is a scam! The Ontario Energy Board bans disconnection between November 15 and April 30 for all residential customers. Only commercial customers are subject to disconnection year-round. Stay up-to-date on your account status by registering for My Account today.

In-Home Energy Audits for Electricity Rebates

GrandBridge Energy will not contact you to set up an energy audit appointment, and we won’t ask for copies of your bills to determine if you are eligible for an electricity rebate.

  • The caller says they are GrandBridge Energy and want to set up an in-home energy audit appointment. This is a scam! GrandBridge Energy is not affiliated with any private energy services companies. We do not contact customers about in-home energy audits or rebates.
  • The caller advises you must set up an appointment to receive the Ontario Energy Rebate (OER) or the Ontario Electricity Support Program (OESP) credit. This is a scam! The OER automatically applies to most Ontario electricity bills (without application), learn more here. The OESP is an income-based credit, and you must apply online for eligibility.
  • You saw a social media post directing you to apply for the OER or OESP. This is a scam! The Ontario Energy Board does not operate a Facebook page. Please apply for the OESP credit through the appropriate program online.

Tips to Protect Yourself

  • Hang up immediately if you suspect a call is fraudulent.
  • Never provide your GrandBridge account, bank, or credit card numbers over the phone or in a text message, unless you’ve initiated the payment phone call.
  • Do not click the link on text messages that offer electricity rebates or credits.
  • Sign up for GrandBridge Energy My Account so you can verify your bill payment history and balance information.
  • If you receive a message about an overdue account, do not call the number left on the message.
