Water & Wastewater Billing

GrandBridge Energy is contracted by the County of Brant to bill municipal water and wastewater services for some residents and businesses in the County of Brant.

To set up a water account in the County of Brant, all you need to do is complete a new application for service.

If you live in the City of Brantford, City of Cambridge or Township of North Dumfries, you must contact the City and/or Township to set up your water account and inquire about your water / wastewater billing.

All new water and wastewater account setups will include a $200 water deposit, payable on the first bill, and refundable after 12 months of consecutive good payment history. The deposit can be waived with a credit reference letter from another Canadian utility showing 12 months of good payment history. You can email your letter to our Customer Service team.

GrandBridge Energy reads your water meter monthly. Your bill is based on actual reads. From time to time, when your meter is not accessible, or the ERT (encoder receiver transmitter) cannot detect a read, Customer Service will attempt to contact you to obtain a read. Based on your historical data, GrandBridge Energy will always try to notify you of higher-than-normal usage.

Water & Wastewater Rate Structure

All water rates are set by the County of Brant. These rates are effective from May 1, 2024, to April 30, 2025. More information on County of Brant Water charges and services is available online.

Historically, water and wastewater rates were set annually. The rate structure consists of a fixed monthly fee specific to the meter size and a volumetric rate for each cubic meter of water used as measured by the water meter.

The monthly fixed charge applies to every meter even if you have not used any water. The budgeted fixed costs include meter reading, billing, customer service, repair, and maintenance costs. Fixed charges are based on a 30-day billing period. If the billing period is greater than or less than 30 days, the fixed charge is prorated accordingly.

Water Monthly Fixed Charge 5/8” meter: $45.34
Water Monthly Fixed Charge 3/4” meter: $67.99
Water Monthly Fixed Charge 1” meter: $113.32
Water Monthly Fixed Charge 1 ½” meter: $226.66
Water Monthly Fixed Charge 2” meter: $362.66
Water Monthly Fixed Charge 3” meter: $770.72

The volumetric charges are based on water consumption, measured by the water meter. The cost of water used is based on a charge per cubic meter. One cubic meter is equal to 1,000 litres or 220 imperial gallons. The size of your meter does not affect the price per cubic meter, however, the rate increases the more water that is used.

0 to 15 cubic meters: $2.22
15.1 to 45 cubic meters: $2.45
45.1 to 100 cubic meters: $2.56
100.1 or more cubic meters: $2.22

*Seasonal premium – May 1 to August 31 – for residential consumers using over 45 cubic meters

45.1 to 100 cubic meters: $3.33
100.1 or more cubic meters: $2.89

Fixed charges are based on a 30-day billing period. If the billing period is greater than or less than 30 days, the fixed charge is prorated accordingly.

Wastewater Monthly Fixed Charge 5/8” meter: $19.41
Wastewater Monthly Fixed Charge 3/4” meter: $29.11
Wastewater Monthly Fixed Charge 1” meter: $48.52
Wastewater Monthly Fixed Charge 1 ½” meter: $97.04
Wastewater Monthly Fixed Charge 2” meter: $155.27
Wastewater Monthly Fixed Charge 3” meter: $329.98

0 to 15 cubic meters: $1.72
15.1 to 45 cubic meters: $1.89
45.1 to 100 cubic meters: $1.98
100.1 or more cubic meters: $1.72

Consumers who go away for extended periods and will not use water may request a snowbird rate. Those consumers will pay 75% of the fixed monthly water charge. The fixed charge applies because certain fixed costs are incurred whether water is used or not.

For this rate to apply, you must shut off your water at the main shut-off valve and contact our Customer Service Team with a water meter reading at the time of shut-off.

Frequently Asked Questions – Water and Wastewater

Water meters are generally located near the water shut-off valve in your basement or crawl space. Newer water meters will have a black cap/lid that you lift open to expose the meter face. Here is an example of what your meter may look like:

An electrical meter shows a reading

If you think you have a water leak, turn off all water-consuming appliances inside and outside your home. Locate your water meter, and if the test dial (a red triangle) on your meter is spinning, water is flowing through the meter. You may want to monitor your meter reading overnight.

  • Toilets are the number one cause of water leaks. If you drop food colouring in the back of the tank and it leaks into the bowl (without flushing the toilet), you have a leak. Toilet leaks can be silent, so it’s a good idea to conduct the test even if you cannot hear the toilet running.
  • Check all taps within the home for drips and leaks
  • Look for water pooling around your furnace, water softener, water heater and water meter
  • Check your outside taps to ensure they are not leaking or were not left on by mistake.

If you find a water leak, notify the County of Brant right away by phone – 519-449-2451 or toll-free 1-888-250-2295

Municipal water is transmitted from the street’s water main to the home or business’ plumbing via a buried water service pipe. The County of Brant owns and maintains the section of the pipe in the road allowance. The property owner owns and maintains the pipe on private property. The buried pipe sometimes needs to be repaired or replaced.

Customers should check their insurance policy to confirm if any repairs/replacement of the pipe is covered under all conditions. The County of Brant has endorsed a water service connection warranty program by Service Line Warranties of Canada (SLWC). Questions regarding the coverage (eligibility, enrollment, etc.) should be directed to SLWC at 1-844-616-8444 or www.slwofc.ca

Municipal addresses ending in even numbers can water on even-numbered calendar days, and municipal addresses ending in odd numbers can water on odd-numbered calendar days, from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and again between 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.

Outside of the times and days described above, outdoor water use is permitted for:

  • Newly planted grass (seed or sod), trees, shrubs and gardens while being installed and during the first 24 hours after the installation
  • Lawns being treated with any pesticide, herbicide or fertilizer that requires water during or within the 24 hours after application
  • Watering cans may be used any day at any time to water plants, trees and vegetable gardens. However, a flowing hose cannot be inserted into the watering can while watering

In times of drought, more stringent conservation measures may be applied. If this occurs, details will be communicated through the County of Brant’s news, social media, local newspapers, letters and radio.
