Supply Mix and Generation

Ontario’s electricity grid is powered by a diverse mix of clean energy sources, including hydroelectricity, nuclear power, natural gas, and renewable energy. Each source produces electricity in a different way and has distinct operating characteristics.

Ontario’s electricity capacity is continually evolving as new generation resources are added, aging facilities are retired, and emerging technologies are integrated into the grid.

Ontario's Energy Output

Total electricity demand in Ontario increased in 2025 by about 4.4 per cent, or 6.2 terawatt-hours from the year before. The province experienced higher electricity demand in the summer compared to the same period in 2024, largely due to prolonged high temperatures. An early, harsh winter in 2025 further contributed to elevated demand.
